- What is a Squishie made of?
- A soft brushed knit yarn in a heavy chunky gauge, picked so it can sit straight against brand new skin. It fastens with two buttons at the front, which are the only hardware on it. No tags, no hard seams, no zips, no cords and no small trims stitched on. The star points are structured into the knit itself rather than stuffed or wired.
- Is it safe for a newborn?
- It is made for supervised cuddle and snuggle time, and that is genuinely how it should be used. There are no cords or ties, it is not tight anywhere, and the star points are knitted in rather than stuffed. What it is not is a sleep product, which is the next question.
- Can my baby sleep in a Squishie?
- No, and we would rather say so plainly than sell you one on a promise we should not make. Safe sleep means baby on their back, in an empty crib, with nothing loose around them. Wear the Squishie while you are with them and awake, then put them down to sleep the normal way.
- Are the buttons safe?
- They are the only hardware on the suit and they are stitched into the knit rather than clipped on. As with any baby clothing that has buttons, give them a quick check before each wear and stop using it if one ever feels loose. It is also part of why this is a supervised, awake-time suit rather than something to sleep in.
- Will their fingers or toes catch in the knit?
- It is knitted tight enough that fingers do not push through the way they do with a loose open weave. That said, this is for time when you are with your baby rather than time they are left in it alone, which covers this and a dozen other things at once.
- Will they overheat in it?
- It is a warm chunky knit, which is the whole point of it, so dress them lightly underneath. A diaper or a thin bodysuit is usually plenty indoors. If the back of the neck feels hot or damp, take them out of it, same as you would with any layer.
- Will it scratch their skin?
- No. The yarn is brushed soft rather than left coarse, and it is the same softness inside and out, so it does not matter which face ends up against their cheek.
- Does it shed or pill?
- Not in normal use. Wash it cold on gentle inside a laundry bag and dry it flat and it holds together. What kills chunky knit is hot water and a tumble dryer, so avoid both.
- What size is a Squishie?
- One size fits all, suitable for babies 0 to 6 months. Laid flat it measures 85cm point to point, 53cm head to tail and 37cm across the body, so there is plenty of room in it as they grow. It arrives folded at 300 x 200 x 30 mm.
- What if my baby is early, or big for their age?
- One size covers 0 to 6 months with a lot of give in the knit, so it works on a 6 pound newborn and on a chunky six month old. There is nothing to measure and nothing to pick.
- Why do I get two Squishies?
- Because one of them is almost always going somewhere else. Buy one and the second is free, so most people keep one and give the other to the next friend who announces they are due. If you would rather keep both, the spare means one can be in the wash without the other being missed.
- Is it a good gift?
